About KSPST

The Road to the Establishment of the Korean Society of
Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology (KSPST)

Since 1970, the Korean Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology (KSPST)
has pursued a single goal: to advance public health in the Republic of Korea.
Here, we introduce the background of our establishment

1970The Inception of the Society

On July 4, 1970, a meeting was held for the Pharmaceutics Division of the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea,
chaired by Professor Jong-Hak Woo. During the meeting, board members were elected and operational matters were discussed.
Professor Min-Hwa Lee from Seoul National University also delivered a special lecture on
“The Use of Computers in the Field of Pharmaceutics.”
At this meeting, it was agreed to establish a new society tentatively named the “Society of Pharmaceutics,”
and an organizing committee was formed with representatives from various sectors as follows:

On September 22 of the same year, Professors Jong-Hak Woo, Hyung-Tae Kang, Jae-Wan Kim, Sang-Min Kim, and Shin-Keun Kim convened at the Department of Pharmaceutics, Seoul National University, to review the draft of the society’s bylaws. Subsequently, on October 13, the Pharmaceutics Division of the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea convened a meeting at Dongduk Women’s University under the chairmanship of Professor Jong-Hak Woo. Around 20 members attended. At this meeting, six additional members were elected to the organizing

committee:
Professors Jae-Ik Yong (Sookmyung Women’s University), Jong-Kap Kim (Chung-Ang University), Se-Ho Han (Chungbuk National University), and members Kwan-Seop Shim (Yungjin Pharm), Byung-Guk Lee and Jung-Soo Kim (both from Dong-A Pharm).

The Official Founding Year 1971

On February 23, 1971, the inaugural meeting of the Korean Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences and
Technology was held at the seminar room of Seoul National University’s College of Pharmacy.
At this event, a Preparatory Committee for the Foundation (chaired by Professor Jong-Hak Woo) was formally established.
With 27 professionals from diverse sectors attending, the meeting was moderated by Associate Professor Shin-Keun Kim.
Following a progress report by Professor Se-Ho Han (Chungnam National University),
Professor Sang-Min Kim read the founding statement, which was unanimously adopted.
The key principles outlined in the founding statement were as follows:
  • 1

To overcome Korea’s academic isolation in the field of pharmaceutical sciences and take a significant leap forward
  • 2

To serve as a leading academic society fostering close collaboration between academia and industry
  • 3

To strengthen academic ties with practical pharmacy
  • 4

To promote scientific advancement in drug formulation technology
  • 5

To actively pursue collaboration and academic exchange with international societies
Following the meeting, a General Assembly Organizing Committee was formed, chaired by Dr. Jong-Hak Woo,
and fifteen committee members were elected from five sectors to finalize the date of the General Assembly,
scheduled for March 6 at Seoul National University’s College of Pharmacy.
The elected members included:

1973Securing the Society’s Office

In 1973, the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST)
initiated a project to build a centralized building for scientific organizations in Korea.
As part of this effort, academic societies were encouraged to join by contributing a designated amount of funding,
which would guarantee them permanent office space in the new building.
At the time, among pharmaceutical science societies, only the Korean Pharmaceutical Association, the Korean Society of Pharmacognosy, and our society existed. While the other two societies declined participation, our society’s executive board decided it was crucial to join. We applied for a 66 m² office, which required a contribution of 1.2 million KRW—considered a substantial sum at the time.
After deliberation, we approached Boryung Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Pacific Chemical Industrial Co., Ltd. and requested support. Thanks to the generous assistance of President Seung-Ho Kim (Boryung) and Chairman Seong-Hwan Seo (Pacific), each company contributed 600,000 KRW to the society. Their generosity remains deeply appreciated to this day.
We promptly completed the move-in process to the KOFST building. Although the area was then largely undeveloped, the building proudly stood on a hill in Yeoksam-dong, which is now a central area of Gangnam, Seoul. To this day, the Korean Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology retains permanent rights to use its original 66 m² office space within the KOFST building.

Background

The Korean Society of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology (KSPST) was established in 1971
with the aim of systematizing the academic foundation of pharmaceutical science in Korea,
elevating research standards, and advancing related technologies in the pharmaceutical industry.
It was also envisioned as a hub for academic exchange and industry-academia cooperation.

On November 13, 1971, KSPST was officially founded during its inaugural academic conference.
Just two days later, on November 15, the first issue of the society’s official journal,
Yagjehak Hoeji (now the Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation), was published,
laying the groundwork for academic dissemination.

Since its founding, KSPST has become a leading professional society in
Korea encompassing all areas of pharmaceutical sciences, including drug formulation,
drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical technologies, and excipient development.
It continues to foster academic collaboration and facilitate cooperation between academia,
industry, and research institutes.
